Batman: The Brave & The Bold #18

DC Comics/Johnny DC (August 2010)

WRITER: Landry Q. Walker
ARTIST: Eric Jones
ASSISTANT EDITOR: Harvey Richards
EDITOR: Michael Siglain
COVER: Eric Jones with Hi-Fi
BATMAN CREATOR: Bob Kane

If you’ve read the Free Comic Book Day kids sampler for 2010, then you’ve already read the first story. This leads into the second story, where Ma’alefa’ak (say that three times fast) has transferred his consciousness to Batman, who seeks Dr. Fate’s help. With Fate’s helmet, Batman is able to protect his mind, and Fate transfers the White Martian’s mind to an eternal prison based on Mars and his own anger.

What they got right: I was going to complain about the FCBD story being used, but the second story shifts from that one nicely, and gives some closure to the first story (the only full story from the special). In this case, anyone who missed Free Comic Book Day or the sampler would have been lost, and outside of a convention, they don’t usually stay on the shelves comes the following Sunday.

What they got wrong: Of course, this does now render the FCBD special useless, since it was all previews of other comics’ stories, and now nothing is unique to the Sampler.

Recommendation: Even if you have the sampler, I recommend picking this up. It’s not like you spent money on it, so spend it on this.
