Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #14
IDW Publishing (September, 2012)STORY: Kevin Eastman & Tom Waltz SCRIPT: Tom Waltz ARTIST: Andy Kuhn COLORIST: Ronda Pattison LETTERER: Shawn Lee EDITOR: Bobby Curnow
At Casey’s place, Raphael learns that Splinter has dealt with his own anger issues. They simply take some of Casey’s stuff and offer to let him live with them, leaving only Casey’s father’s pride damaged. Back at the lair, Splinter makes a shocking announcement to the Turtles. Meanwhile, Stockman learns the history of Krang and the Utrom and Shredder thinks he’s found the perfect second for his Foot army–Leonardo!
What they got right: While too toned down to earn any Best Scene nominations, this issue did a fair job of working the exposition into the story, letting us learn more about the characters’ history and building out the new TMNT world. Plus we got to see Casey’s father sweat it out a bit. What kind of growth Raphael gets from this we will have to see.
What they got wrong: All I can really add here is to reiterate my dislike of Splinter’s character model.
Recommendation: This issue is probably more for people who want to know more of this world’s backstory than anyone looking for some good old ninja action. If you’re the former, it’s at least worth a read, if only for Krang’s story.
